Ditch the Scale
What feelings come up when you weigh yourself? Generally, something doesn’t feel quite right. We might feel ashamed for weight gain or briefly proud of weight loss, knowing deep down that a lower number on the scale isn’t all that it seems. Many of you might agree with me, but there’s still that little voice in the back of our heads with the distorted message that we would be happier if we were thinner. This message is so concerning, especially when we see the negative social, psychological, and physical damage that dieting can cause. I’m getting really sick of the power that the scale holds over many of us. Despite the harmful messages that diet culture throws at us, I also know it feels so freeing when you’re finally able to give up these external tools that we use to measure our worth. It might be hard to change your thoughts about the importance of the scale, but we can certainly change behaviors if we’re willing to give it a try. The cool thing is that our thinking tends to follow our behaviors, so if we start behaving differently, our thoughts might get the hint. In what ways would you rather measure your self worth? Is there a more positive way you could start your day? You’re so much more than a stupid number.
Ditching the scale is a transformative step towards reclaiming your relationship with food and your body. The number on the scale can often create unnecessary stress and dictate your self-worth, leading to a cycle of negative thoughts and unhealthy behaviors.
Imagine a life where your progress isn’t tied to a number but rather to how you feel, both physically and emotionally. By letting go of the scale, you open the door to intuitive eating—a practice that encourages listening to your body’s cues rather than rigidly following diet rules. You’ll shift your focus away from weight and towards nourishment, enjoyment, and satisfaction.
